Much like the recent storm swept through the northern region the prior day, Manchester City overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad. It was a convincing three goal win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their title credentials as they strengthened their place at the league summit.

Successive Losses for Manchester United

This result represented back-to-back league losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the league leaders with their title hopes severely dented.

The Red Devils' capability to manage domestic and European soccer with a limited roster has been a frequently analyzed issue since they qualified for the Champions League. Looking at the schedule, it always felt like this was the period that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Regrettably for the away side, they looked tired throughout, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had tried to freshen things up with a handful of adjustments. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all brought vigor, although the omission of the in-form Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

The hosts, in contrast, have no such workload issues. The City coach made a single alteration from last week’s win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

The pressure started to build for the United boss and his team from the first whistle. This was a show of the strength from City whose dynamic forward line controlled and pulled the visitors apart with a sublime first half display that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

This left the home team completely dominant and saw the visitors all at sea. Prior to this encounter, United had let in just few in this WSL season but they fell apart in the wake of City’s attacking flair.

Early Chances

The early indicators came soon when Miedema used her strength to push Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the heart of everything from the start, exploiting the gap left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' right flank. Her crosses were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg kicked off the line.

United had several sorties forward, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the flanks but they could not challenge Ayaka Yamashita. City, in the meantime, commanded the ball, probing their opponents and trying to pull them out of their organization.

Goals Galore

They converted their dominance with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A ball to the back post was nodded across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was City’s 7th goal from a cross of the term.

They extended their advantage with an additional two goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was able to advance through the middle from defense, the pitch became spacious for City. The prominent Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before sending a precise low cross for Shaw to bundle home. Shortly later, they had a third goal after a rapid turnover in possession saw Lauren Hemp given the space to strike a shot home from range.

Final Period

The primary substitution came from Skinner at the break as Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the contest. Ex- City player Park came closest, striking the upright, but the away team were lacking in ideas and were unable to record a single shot on goal.

The home side, on the other hand, could have added to their lead when a superb Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the winning team. Previously unable to overcome any team who ended above them the previous campaign, City's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a favorable situation after nine games.
